SENSORY EVOLUTION GALLERY HISTORY & FOCUS
Sensory Evolution Gallery was originally founded in late 1982 as one of
the first, of many to follow, cutting-edge contemporary art galleries
in New York City’s then gritty East Village. Exhibiting works in all
media with a focus on what was coined “contemporary pop”, the gallery &
its artists enjoyed great success, international attention & exposure,
& critical pressaccolades throughout its life as a traditional gallery for nearly
seven years. Initially opened in a small storefront space, the gallery
quickly grew necessitating a move to a space more than six times in
size within the East Village while simultaneously opening a second
location in NYC’s Soho art district.
At the same time, the gallery’s founder, Steven Style, pioneered the
“pop up” gallery concept by opening temporary galleries in a variety of
non-traditional venues as distant, in both miles & culture, to NYC as
Identified by New York Magazine as New York City’s “Impresario of the
Avant Garde”, Style was highly sought after as an external curator for
both customary & alternative spaces & was tapped by the top night
clubs & restaurants to advise on & manage art installations &
exhibitions. The late 80′s recession forced Style to shutter Sensory
Evolution Gallery’s doors at the close of that decade.
Since that time, Style has dealt art on a private basis & provided
art & cultural consultation services to a variety clients including
corporations & municipalities, both domestically & internationally,
including the cities of Berlin & Potsdam, Germany.
Now, thirty years after its 1983 debut, plans are under way to return
Sensory Evolution into the mix as a traditional retail gallery in 2013.
As the kick-off of the gallery’s anticipated segue back into public
eye view, Sensory Evolution will participate in the eagerly awaited new
OVERTURE Contemporary Art Fair.
As Sensory Evolution’s history illustrates & its mission mandates, the
gallery’s emphasis continues to be on showcasing works by emerging &
mid-career artists. Building on that, at OVERTURE the gallery will
exhibit both vintage ’80s & new works by now firmly established
mid-career & “blue chip” artists such as Leslie Lew, Jim Radakovich,
George Condo, Donald Baechler, Keith Haring, Jean Michel & Jeff
Koons. All of whom started their careers as young emerging artists
during the historic 1980s East Village, NYC art scene & some of whom
mounted their first-ever solo exhibitions at the original Sensory
Sensory Evolution will also proudly showcase works by select rapidly
rising, new to the gallery, artists including Gerry Stecca & Mike
Rivamonte, whose works parallel those of the more established artists
on exhibit in the gallery’s OVERTURE Contemporary Art Fair booth.

30’’ x 40’’ PHSCologram, Duratrans, Kodalith, Plexigas
art(n) Gallery | Chicago
Ellen Sandor’s passion for photography, technology, and outsider art inspired her to invent a new methodology for producing art with a new medium of expression for the digital age.
In 1981, she first created a unique large-scale three-dimensional photographic mural commissioned by a private collector. This immersive installation combined photography and sculpture with the visual illusion of holography and other Op-Art forms.
From the success of this project, Sandor formed a collaborative group of artists in 1983 with her peers from The School of the Art Institute called (art)n. The first project they produced, called PHSCologram ‘ 83, is an early example of a virtual reality environment assembled within an artistic context, and opened a dialogue with other artists working in digital media and traditional art forms.
Since the early 1980s, a large body of work has been produced under Sandor s direction by the (art)n collective and numerous collaborators. Recurring themes explored include early tributes to artists, virtual portraits, science as art, visual history, video game culture, Chicago Imagists, and renderings of unrealized architectural plans. These large ensemble projects have been shown internationally in galleries, museums, symposia, and publications, and are collected by private individuals and distinguished institutions.
The PHSCologram term, coined in 1983, by Ellen Sandor, is an acronym for photography, holography, sculpture and computer graphics (pronounced skol-o-gram). The PHSCologram medium inspired new ideas in multimedia circles, and influenced three decades of (art)n’s collaborative portfolio, unsurpassed for its prolific range of content and innovation in digital photography.
Inspired by the process oriented works of Man Ray, Duchamp and Moholy Nagy, the early process for creating PHSColograms combined sculpture with photography, resulting in a three-dimensional photograph, viewed with rear lighting. The (art)n group Sandor formed with her peers from The School of the Art Institute in 1983 created large-scale sculptures and collaged backgrounds that were photographed 9 times at slightly different positions in a horizontal movement with a room sized camera.
These images took 30 minutes for each exposure, which were combined with a special darkroom technique to one piece of transparent, color film. A second piece of black-and- white film displaying clear vertical lines was mounted to a piece of plexiglas with the blurred, combined image mounted to the reverse. The line screen functioned as a viewing screen to interpret the transparent photograph as a three-dimensional sculpture.
By 1990, PHSColograms became a digital photographic process, by simulating the early darkroom technique with other features common to the computer graphics industry. PHSCologram imagery is constructed from sculpting objects with a computer graphics software application. These objects are painted, and placed in a scene with lighting and other special effects. Once the digital scene is complete, a series of as many as 65 images are photographed in (art)n’s proprietary art program.
These snapshots are captured at slightly different positions across a horizontal plane, and combined on the computer for final output to transparent film. (art)n’s program also generates a matching linescreen to interpret the final mounted photograph as a three-dimensional sculpture.
This process of photographing computer-combined images on the computer that are visible with special viewing apparatus is a patented process, invented and owned by Ellen Sandor and her colleagues.

Steven Steele has been an antique collector most of his life and progressed to Art in the 80s. By 1985, he was touring Florida doing Antique Shows and Art Exhibitions. In 2004, when the focus of the business was Andy Warhol and his Contemporaries, Steven started the Fine Art Expositions in addition to suppling dealers and brokers worldwide. Steven’s home is now is covered with a mix of French Posters from the 1880s to Contemporary works by Dali, Warhol, Rivers, Matta and Philippe Dodard, the most important living Haitian artist.
Steven has been a true Art Lover for many years and prides himself on being honest and frank with both the novice and dealers. “No one should purchase Art as an investment. You purchase art because you enjoy and appreciate it. No art will go up in value overnight, so you may as well enjoy looking at it while you’re waiting for your investment to grow.” Steven is more than happy to take the time to guide collectors of what might be the better investment, or what might fit your decor.

Exhibit A Fine Arts and Editions | Short Hills
Booth 110 - 211
Until 2004, Exhibit A existed as a SoHo New York fine art gallery exhibiting paintings, prints and video works by American, Russian and European artists. As early as 1991, Greg Smith had begun to publish, co-publish, fund the production of and invest in the production of fine art editions by major established artists and emerging artists. This list included work by Robert Indiana, Ed Paschke and Donald Sultan through his collaborations with American Image Editions. Even today, this collaboration has just resulted in the creation of a seminal portfolio of screen prints by Robert Cottingham, co-published by Exhibit A and American Image. Over three years in the making, that portfolio features some of the very best imagery by the artist, including his important ART and STAR.
The print medium affords outstanding artists considerable flexibility in their choice of two and three dimensional creative expression and simultaneously allows collectors both the ability to own original yet affordable works by these artists, and the ability to more easily build a collection of original artwork containing a wide variety of artists within or across genres. Exhibit A is therefore pleased to have created twelve major editions by four of the leading Chinese contemporary artists working today. These artists – Feng Zhengjie, Guo Wei, Huang Yan and Yang Qian are artists who, as a group, present a diverse and rich mixture of aesthetic styles and are at once unified by what has become a powerful and brash heritage as primary artists of a generation that will, for the 21st century and beyond, be looked upon as setting the standard for Chinese (and indeed Asian) artistic direction.
Contemporary Chinese fine art has emerged over the past two decades. Insightful western and Asian collectors began to support its development by acquiring and disseminating important examples of this work in exhibitions throughout the world, especially in Europe and the major cultural centers of Asia. At this writing, Chinese contemporary art enjoys a well-established primary and secondary market and is prominently featured in countless important public and private fine art collections worldwide. Exhibit A is honored to work with a group of the leading artists within this movement who are producing unusual, highly creative works in print.
It is a mission of Exhibit A to introduce Chinese contemporary art to a broader audience in America and elsewhere. We believe that the 21st century is a Chinese century and that the artists we publish will remain a powerful and influential force in the evolution of world culture. It is also our mission, and of equal importance, that we offer a fine selection of international contemporary art from our diverse and wholly owned inventory, including other fine print editions published by Exhibit A along with paintings, prints, sculpture and objects from the secondary market.

The Hal Katzen Gallery, located at 459 Washington Street in the north edge of Tribeca in New York City, continues Mr. Katzen’s career as an art dealer for over 25 years. The emphasis of the gallery is to provide quality works of art by International Contemporary and Modern Masters. Hal Katzen’s love for works on paper has been his primary focus. He works with prints, and unique works on paper as well as paintings and sculpture. Both the new collector and the seasoned will find works of the highest quality. It is Mr. Katzen’s goal to help collectors meet their art needs by finding special works of art. Through a long history of working directly with collectors, Hal Katzen has been able to help create a complete collection, or find that special piece. The gallery works with individual and corporate collections in selling and locating works of art. Not bound to style or period, he has been able to help in the placement of major paintings and sculptures by many major artists.
Mr. Katzen’s involvement in art began at birth as the son of sculptor Lila Katzen. His exposure to art and artists of the period began early in life. Growing up in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and surrounded by many of the artists and their works from the decades that followed the Hofmann School, shaped his vision. Knowing important artists of that time and his personal relationships with them created a lasting impression of that period. Mr. Katzen graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. While attending college in the 70’s he found his love for the gallery world and has continued in it ever since. In the late 70’s, after moving to New York, he helped direct the Art Publishing company Tranworld Art and the the Alex Rosenberg Gallery. It was in the mid 80’s that Mr. Katzen opened his first gallery in SoHo. It was here he promoted a series of emerging and mid-career artists and continued in the sale of secondary works in the gallery. In the early 90’s he felt it important to work as a private dealer and operate privately from a more intimate space on West Broadway. Mr. Katzen was instrumental in the galleries that opened in the Meat Market District in Chelsae.

Rubem Robierb Studio I New York, Miami
Rubem Robierb was born in the Brazilian state of Maranhão in 1976, which is also the cradle of several Brazilian poets. For many years, Robierb lived between poetry and photography using photos to translate his words into images and make them visual. As time went by, the artist found that he had little time for writing because photography had become the greatest part of his life and work. It suffices to say that Robierb didn’t necessarily stop writing but merely began to write with lights and shapes … not words. Today, Robierb says he believes his pictures are to be read. At the age of 20, Robierb moved to São Paulo, Brazil to become a professional photographer in the advertising industry. Art et Partage Association in Aix en Provence, France, sponsored his first solo show, Brezil Autrement, and a book for his works. In Zurich, Image House Gallery also presented his solo show Brezil Autrement. In Paris, Quadra Gallery presented his series Visages Metis. In Milan, The Brezil-Italy Institute presented his series Negros in a solo show.
In Monaco, he participated in the Art Curial Monaco for Fight Aids Foundation. In Sao Paulo, at The Alliance Francaise, he had his solo show Brezil Autrement. Four years ago, Robierb moved to the United States continuing developing his artistic career; now he lives between New York city and Miami, where he has his own studio, and he makes part of the Art Basel scene. In the last Art Basel season he presented Eros Thanatos, a solo show at Red Dot Art Fair; he is currently presenting Show Me the Money, at Curators Voice Art Projects Gallery, until February 2012.
His works are represented in collections in New York, Milan, Paris, Monaco, Zurich, and Miami.
As an Artist, Robierb focuses on the contemporary American society, making emphasis in the sociocultural issues that define our current times. He also focuses in the human figure, and the different aspects that reveal the human body language. His approach to photography is rather edgy, political, ironic and critical, and for that very reason, quite motivating. Robierb is keen on photographing all sorts of people, objects and scenes around the world with its different shapes and ethnicities. He intertwines images in a critical way giving his personal vision of our contemporary world. Sometimes, his work are very minimal, eliminating all superfluous details; other times his photographs mix in a kind of collage, as a result of the combining his own images to explosive colors and external subjects. He defines his photographs as SHARP and BOLD, but they are rather provocative and disturbing, conforming an ironic statement mixed with a harmonic beauty. As he says: “You can like or not like my art but you never will walk out without some emotional reaction or thought about what you saw, and this is exactly my GOAL. Since I stopped writing poems and became a photographer, the images can “talk” things that the words just can’t.”
Robierb’s unique method of photographing unexpected facial angles reveals the uniqueness of human nature in opposite states such as masculine/ feminine, white/ black, good/evil, happiness/sorrow, and peace/anger.
